Leadership Opportunities

At GW’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences, we believe leadership is not just a title - it’s a practice that grows through service, reflection, and collaboration. Our leadership offerings are designed to help students contribute meaningfully to the medical school community while developing the skills to lead with purpose in their future careers as physician leaders.

Scholarly Concentration Student Leadership Program

Each Scholarly Concentration (SC) offers students the opportunity to step into a leadership role that helps shape the direction and culture of their concentration community.

Student Leaders serve as key liaisons between their peers and faculty, helping to foster engagement, support communication, and organize opportunities and activities within the concentration. Leadership opportunities are open to returning students in all concentrations.

SC Student Leader Responsibilities

  • Attending a Fall Leadership Kick-Off session and regular SC info sessions
  • Supporting recruitment and orientation of new SC students
  • Collaborating with SC directors to promote events and initiatives
  • Serving as a point-of-contact for peers interested in the SC
  • Encouraging community and connection among SC members
  • Participating in periodic feedback and planning meetings with OSPE

Through this role, students gain experience in communication, peer mentorship, event planning, and strategic thinking—skills that are transferable to both clinical and academic leadership.

Application Requirements

Applicants must be returning medical students enrolled in a scholarly concentration with good academic standing.

The 2025 - 2026 SC Student Leader Application is currently closed and not accepting applications. Interested students can expect the 2026 - 2027 application materials and information to be available in early spring 2026.

Community Building Event Form for SC Student Leaders

Additional Leadership Opportunities for SMHS MD Students

In addition to the Scholarly Concentration Student Leadership Program and the LEAD pilot program, medical students at GW SMHS have access to a variety of other leadership pathways:

Medical Center Student Council (MCSC)

Medical Center Student Council (MCSC), promotes collaboration between SMHS programs and supports the endeavors of its constituents. MCSC plans Follies & Formal, approves and allocates funding to student groups, offers conference funding opportunities to medical students, and acts as a voice for the student body to SMHS Deans and the GW University at large.

Interested in getting involved?

Visit the Student Council website to learn more about MCSC’s constitution, leadership structure, and timeline for elections and appointments.

Student Organizations (SIGs)

Student-led organizations provide opportunities to lead, collaborate, and make an impact in areas of personal and professional interest. Whether you're joining an existing organization or hoping to start a new one, these groups are essential to the vibrant student life at GW SMHS.

Opportunities Database

The Opportunities Database houses 450+ opportunities for medical students to get involved in projects, find internships, attend conferences or workshops, and apply for scholarships or other sources of funding.  Additionally, there are leadership opportunities within the database designed to help medical students grow their leadership skills and capabilities.  If you have any questions regarding the leadership opportunities or want to suggest an opportunity for the database, please email our office at ospe [at] gwu [dot] edu (ospe[at]gwu[dot]edu) or stop by Ross Hall 202.
